The Senior Practice Director of Hospital Services partners with the Director of Operations (DO) to provide high-level leadership and strategic direction for the organization’s clinical services. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality and patient-centered care. The professional in this position is responsible for the development, management and oversight of the portfolio, as well as overseeing operational, financial, and clinical quality and care experience performance across clinical departments. This role is also a point of contact and support for both Chief of Hospital Operations positions at our Kaiser Permantente Sunnyside and Westside Medical Centers. In addition, this role oversees five hospital sites where Northwest Permanente physicians are based. The Hospital Services portfolio includes numerous regional on-demand service lines, many of which run 24/7, 365 days per year such as Emergency Medicine and Urgent Care. This role will require some flexible availability in support of leadership teams as operational issues arise. This position is a hybrid role including a mix of working remote and on-site. Major Responsibilities:
- Develop and implements the strategic vision and goals for the portfolio and each department in alignment with the organization’s overall mission and objectives.
- Works with executive leadership to define and execute on performance improvement initiatives to enhance clinical outcomes and operational efficiency.
- Fosters collaboration among subspecialty departments and other clinical and operational teams to drive integrated care models and improve patient care delivery.
Oversees the day-to-day operations of hospital-based, continuum of care, urgent care, and convenient care departments ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and best practices.
- Manages staffing, resource allocation, and budgeting for the portfolio.
- Implements best practices for quality improvement and patient safety across all areas of accountability.
- Monitors key performance indicators for the Quadruple Aims performance.
- Manages and mentors medical directors, clinicians, and administrative staff. Provides leadership and guidance to ensure staff engagement, professional development, and retention. Fosters a culture of teamwork, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Collaborates with other department heads (e.g., nursing, research, administration) to ensure alignment of strategies and operational plans.
- Acts as the key liaison with other internal departments, as well as external stakeholders, such as academic institutions, insurance companies, and regulatory bodies.
- Represents the portfolio in various organizational committees, meetings, and professional forums.
- Develops and manages the annual budget for subspecialty services, ensuring efficient allocation of resources.
- Monitors revenue and expenses across subspecialty departments, working to optimize financial performance while maintaining high-quality care.
- Ensures compliance with all relevant regulatory and accreditation bodies.
- Stays current on industry trends, changes in healthcare regulations, and advances in care delivery to ensure that the organization remains at the forefront of medical care.
Minimum Education and Work Experience:
- Master's degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration, or related field or equivalent education and experience.
- Ten (5) years of general management experience in a complex, multi-faceted healthcare setting and in working with a large physician group practice managing through influence and collaboration.
- Five (5) years of progressive people management experience including but not limited to: training, employee development/assessment, team building and collaboration, and/or conflict resolution.
- Five (5) years of experience in financial management, budget development, program development, quality improvement and project management.
- Ability to lead in a culturally diverse environment and promote culturally competent care.
- Demonstrated understanding of clinical and operational processes; staff licensure/certification, clinical competency requirements and scope of practice concepts.
- Ability to analyze, integrate and use quantitative data informed decisions about quality improvement and collaborating with clinical staff, back-office staff, and team to achieve expected outcomes.
- Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.
- Business management experience in health care setting preferred.
- Ability to lead and implement change management and process improvement activities preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in managing on-demand physician operations such as Emergency Medicine, Hospital Medicine, or Urgent Care preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding and experience in supply-demand modeling and heat mapping, and physician scheduling based on those results preferred.
