Overview

Northwest Permanente (NWP) is the largest multispecialty medical group in Oregon and southwest Washington with 1,500+ physicians and 300+ administrative professionals caring for 615,000+ Kaiser Permanente members. Northwest Permanente is owned and led by physicians who earn competitive salaries, without income based on providing individual services. Our medical group comprises board-certified physicians across 50+ specialties.

We invite applications for a Board Certified or Eligible Physiatrist to join our integrated and compassionate team of 9 Physicians and 3 Physician Assistants to support our patients at the Kaiser North Lancaster Medical Center team in Salem, OR. Our ideal candidate will have the ability to provide high-quality, comprehensive care with a robust, supportive clinical and administrative staff. This role is part-time, mainly focused on procedures with a small amount of clinic time (~3 days of procedures and a ½ day of clinic). Must be able to do EMG’s and ultrasound guided injections for shoulder and hip.

Our care responsibilities are delineated by Department Service Agreements so care roles are typically discrete among departments. Chronic pain and disability issues are managed by our primary care providers which result in efficient and streamlined care for these members and allow us to work as a consultative service within the health system. Expertise in musculoskeletal ultrasound procedures, electrodiagnosis, and Rehabilitation Consultation is required. All our referrals to Physiatry Spine Procedures (ESI and SIJ) come from Physiatry or our Spine Program. Referrals to Pain Service are for Cervical facet and Cervical ESI and Lumbar Facet procedures and come from the Spine Program. This group is run by our Anesthesia Pain fellows.

Your role with our team will likely include most of the following:

  • Proceduralists (ultrasound and fluoro-guided hip and shoulder injections, ESI, SI Joint, Botox for limb spasticity, Electrodiagnosis [except for muscle and certain niche neurodegenerative diseases]).
  • Differential Diagnosticians (especially as it pertains to cervical spine /shoulder and lumbar spine/hip. Virtual Care is expected to be optimized whenever possible, especially as the first line of evaluation.
  • The bulk of what we do is US (Ultrasound) guided injections much more often than fluoro. Most providers are not doing fluoro in PM&R here any longer.
  • Access to Sonosite ultrasound machines

Below are some treatments we either don’t do or won’t see done by the physician in this new position.

  • Cervical & thoracic spine injections (epidurals, facet procedures)
  • Spinal cord stimulators & (RFA’s) radiofrequency ablation procedures are done through the pain clinic. The RFAs are something we were supposed to take on in PM&R but did not happen.
  • Baclofen pumps (I think patients have to go outside Kaiser for these)
  • Regenerative medicine procedures such as prolotherapy, PRP
  • Chronic pain medication management (this is through Primary Care & a dedicate Pain clinic.)

What You Can Expect:

  • No after-hours or weekend call
  • 0.70 FTE (.60 clinical = 24-hour work week plus .1 FTE = 4 hours unscheduled administrative time).
  • Standard, 40-minute appointments with the opportunity for 80-minute appointments when patients are more complex
  • An experienced support staff
  • Access to a physician-friendly advanced Epic EMR
  • Opportunities for leadership positions within the medical group if desired
  • Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) eligibility

Minimum Requirements:

  • Board Certified or Eligible in PM&R (Physiatry)
  • 3+ years practice experience
  • Expertise in musculoskeletal ultrasound procedures and electrodiagnosis required.

We Provide You:

  • Generous automatic employer-funded pension and retirement contributions totaling 21% of clinician eligible earnings with additional employee contribution optional
  • Competitive compensation that is not based on fee-for-service model
  • Pathway for physicians to become shareholders of Northwest Permanente
  • Paid annual education leave + annual education allowance
  • Comprehensive benefits including largely employer-funded medical, dental insurance premiums, life insurance, and paid leave
  • Complete professional liability coverage provided at no cost, 100% reimbursement for obtaining and maintaining board certification, continuing medical education reimbursement, and in-house CME opportunities

Current hiring incentives for this role:

  • Relocation allowance – up to $15,000

The annual salary for this position is $167,370 - $204,120 for a .7 FTE, which considers an applicant’s skills and qualifications, certain degrees and certifications, training, market data, and other relevant factors. In addition to the salary range above, NWP offers rich benefits that add substantial value to the total compensation package.
