    Northwest Permanente, P.C. is a self-governed, physician led, multi-specialty group of over 1500 physicians, surgeons, and clinicians, caring for over 600,000 members in Oregon and Southwest Washington. We are seeking a Copy Editor & Publishing Coordinator to perform copyediting services for The Permanente Press (The Permanente Journal, collections, books, etc): edit and revise manuscripts and write journal copy. This position will communicate and work with authors and editors to complete the submission, editing, and publishing process to meet publishing standards. In addition this role will manage the Continuing Medical Education and distribution activities of The Permanente Journal as well as coordinate and implement new and special projects. 


    Editorial Accountabilities

    • Edit manuscripts for accuracy, clarity, and style. Revise manuscripts and create journal copy as necessary.
    • Work closely with physician, clinician, nursing, and administrative authors and editors to complete manuscript editing, revision, and rewriting tasks.
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and understanding of language and scientific medical editing requirements.
    • Fact-check to ensure manuscripts are accurate and free of plagiarism.
    • Attend and present, where appropriate, at internal and external editorial meetings.

    Publishing-Related Accountabilities

    • Coordinate manuscript and review processes by advising and corresponding with physician and administrative authors, reviewers, and section editors.
    • Collaborate with departmental colleagues and senior leaders to refine processes and/or approaches to better achieve performance objectives and increase the overall value of the Journal.
    • Manage the Journal’s Continuing Medical Education mobile web application platform. Coordinate Journal CME activities.
    • Manage ScholarOne, the manuscript management system used by The Permanente Press.
    • Coordinate Journal distribution activities.
    • Contribute to departmental and team planning and goal-setting.

    Special Projects

    • Participate in design, coordination, and implementation of special projects as needed.

    Participation on International Editorial Board

    • Provide information and ongoing support to national and international Editorial Team members.
    • Collaborate with national and international Editorial Team members in developing and implementing new products and programs.
    • Advise national and international Editorial Team members on Journal processes and operations.
    • Represent the Journal at national Kaiser Permanente and non-Kaiser Permanente meetings and conferences.


    • Bachelor’s degree in English, communication, journalism, or related field.
    • Minimum four (4) years of work experience editing and writing; minimum two (2) years work experience in medical editing.

    Additional Requirements

    • Comprehensive knowledge of standard principles of editing and writing in a medical field; excellent writing skills; ability to edit manuscripts and communicate with authors effectively; excellent organizational skills; ability to prioritize and focus on details despite heavy workloads and deadlines; knowledge of conventions of publishing; ability for creative problem-solving; ability to represent The Permanente Journal and The Permanente Press at internal and external meetings and conferences.
    • Knowledge of the AMA Manual of Style, the Scientific Style and Format, and the Chicago Manual of Style.
    • Expertise in Microsoft Word, with an emphasis on editing and tables formatting, and Microsoft Excel.

    Preferred Work Experience and Qualifications

    • ELS (Board of Editors in the Life Sciences) certification.
